I grew up hearing a lot of stories about the abundance of food, particularly of fruits in Angola. Some of my Angolan friends, especially a long time family friend called Matilde always dazzled me with stories of going out for a walk, or doing a picnic on the wild and not needing to take any food at all... She used to say: "wherever you go, there was always a tree, or some other kind of plant you can eat, or collect fruits from... Mangoes, pineapples, papayas, Avocados... everything was right there, provided by nature, for free..."
I have to admit that when I first arrived in Angola, I wasn't able to see that.
This was one of the experiences missing in my portfolio.
Yes, the above photo of fruits is nice and colorful, but... I bought it from a market and of all the places I've been so far in Angola, I couldn't find that abundance that was described to me.
I thought that maybe the war destroyed it all, that maybe I was never gonna have a taste of this... until now...

Finally a taste of the African food dream...
This weekend, I finally had a taste of that old African food dream...
Around 20 Km south of Porto Amboim in direction to Sumbe, near the Keve River, I noticed that the landscape suddenly turned incredibly green, like an Oasis on the desert.
On the right and left sides of the road there was an huge concentration of dense trees. Then, we looked closer. They're not just green... they are sprinkled with red...
Yep... Mangoes!!!

I'm sorry if I don't have photos of me delighting myself with these beauties, but you really don't wanna see it... I didn't had a bib, so it was not a pretty sight...
